Podfic Remix Challenge - Info Gathering
Back in June when there was a lot of podfic meta talk going on a couple people floated around the idea that it would be fun to have a podfic remix challenge. I was kind of hoping one would materialize but it doesn't look like any one has taken up the challenge. So of course I'm now thinking of running one. :)
What is a podfic remix challenge?
Much like the various fic remix challenges out there, a podfic challenge would involve putting the podfics you have made on the table and inviting another to make their own version of it. And in return you would make a podfic of a story another participant has already podficed.
Why would we do this?
Every reader brings a unique interpretation of the text. One reader will read a scene with a tinge of sadness, another with hopefulness. Some readers do voices, others add music to their podfics. Not to mention everyone has their own sound, feel and style. Two people can read the same fic and still produce two very different, yet equally awesome podfics.
I'm also hoping that running a challenge like this would help with the stigma that currently exists around multiple podfics of the same story. People seem to think that if someone makes a podfic of something that's already been podficed it's because they found the first podfic lacking in some way. Never mind that there are a lot of other reasons someone might want to podfic the story.
This won't be about that though and hopefully it'll help people realize that just because two podfics are a reading of the same story doesn't mean that they are copies of each other (podfic is not just a format shift from text to audio, it's an art form, a performance), or that one is necessarily better than the other. Just like a cover of a song can bring a new dimension/feel to the song.
Before I jump headlong into this challenge though, I wanted to see if there's an interest first. So, a poll:
Edit: Please pretend that I can count, and that the last question had the options 1, 2-4 and 5+ *headdesk*

I don't have time to podfic right now, but others could remix my podfics if they'd like.

I'd like to participate but I havn't podficed (much) before.

No.

If you'd like to participate, how many podfics have you made?
Do you have at least one podfic under an hour?
If you don't have a podfic unter an hour, what is your shortest podfic?
Of the podfics you've made, how many different fandoms are they in?

when i was talking with phela about a remix challenge, we were actually talking about sound remix, in the more original meaning - manipulation of files, re-edits to tell a new story, slow downs, pitch changes, re-edits, treating it as sound collage, etc. that is something we're still working out the details on, and something that we definitely want to make opt-in for remixees, because it manipulates and reinterprets their work in a way not everyone is likely to be comfortable with. re-recording, on the other hand, is totally independent of the original podficcer. does that make sense?

I'm certainly not the one introducing the idea of needing permission from the reader (which I don't believe is necessary BTW). Most of the conversations I've see around the podficing community about multiple recordings have had podficers admitting that they would be hurt by the idea of someone podficing something they've already podficed without first speaking to them (sometimes even if they do speak to them first).
There's too much hurt going around about the idea right now. While I don't support the idea of needing permission first, there isn't any other way to run an exchange like this (unless I want to open myself up to a lot of wank) without it being an opt in kind of thing. And since I'm allowing newer podficers, that don't have enough podfic themselves, to take part, I needed to have the non-participant option.
I know that this implies permission is needed but I don't think it's strong enough to set a rule for the fandom if the fandom wasn't already leaning that way. And after some discussion with
And we may just have to agree to disagree on this, but I feel that it's more important to work in baby steps, and introduce a positive idea about multiple versions before working on getting rid of the podficer permission.

it's your call! i just felt i needed to say it.
i did see your line in the rules about how not opting in to this challenge doesn't keep all the stories you've ever read from being re-read, which -- good call. the last thing you need is to be seen as the re-record police for the rest of time, i'm guessing.
i'll admit i'm a little bummed that i need to find a new term that means 'remix' when we get things sorted out to do actual remix. that's why they make thesaurii, though, and there's sure to be some wacky technical term out there. :p
all else aside, i like your emphasis on the variety that readers bring via interpretation.

God, I would not even want to try. In fact, if I open the comm up for people to keep remixing a year 'round, I would not demand that people get podficers permission first. I just need that level of permission for the way the actual challenge is run.

If dreamwidth allowed you to change journal names I totally would have been willing to change the name of my comm to, like, podcover, or something (since what I'm doing is a lot closer to covering a song than remixing it) but it looks like it's not possible at the moment.

but now i'm all excited to call mine something wacky like "bendfoldspindlemutilatepodfest" or something. well, something shorter than that. :p
