That they will know I'm there, that I know they are there, but that we are happily ignoring each other.
And when it works, it works great. I just hate having to rely on it. :)

My one small change of opinion in all of this has been the recent information released by OTW about how they intend to handle C&D's etc. Their case by case, on merit/support approach heartens me.
Yeah, I'm really glad I asked that question at the chat, I was slightly afraid that I was diving into things too early (since I was like the second person to ask a question), but I think a *large* part of the panic that has been occurring in fandom over the OTW has happened with the mistaken belief that the OTW is going to be doing things they have no intention of really doing.
I’m really, *really* glad that they’re doing these chats, because currently their FAQs are more for (or to please) outsiders looking in, rather than addressing fandoms actual concerns. I think a lot of the people set against the site are against it for things they don’t really need to worry about. And I do blame the OTW for not being out there explaining things better.

No, I'm not interested in mainstream society's approval. It's not why I'm in fandom. But a little protection would be nice.
*nods* I actually like, to some extent, that we’re not mainstream. I like that I can have a conversation with my sister about fandom, talk about the slashfic we read, and what we enjoy and not have my parents understand a word we’re saying. :P
But I do definitely want that extra protection. I think part of the problem is, as the internet become more mainstream, fandom becomes more accessible to those who don’t know about it, and it starts to put fandom on more equal footing with TPTB. I mean, the internet is becoming most peoples primary research resource, and google doesn’t always point to official sources of info first. That’s why I think disclaimers are so important, it’s harder for TPTB to see us as equals when we’re bending over backwards to put them in a higher position than us.

You can't turn that hunger to a 'safe', purpose-built product and expect us all to migrate to it. Because there will always be other products out there which will inevitably draw our hunger away.
Exactly. And outsiders just don’t seem to get that. To use another hobby as an example, look at crafting. Telling fandom to be happy in another, safe fandom, is like going to someone who does cross-stitch for fun, and saying "You can’t do that, here’s some knitting instead, I’m sure you’ll be fine, since they’re both crafts, look at all the other people who like knitting." And sure, there’s nothing wrong with knitting, and some might be fine switching, or find that they like knitting more, but you know what? I like cross-stitching, and the two aren’t interchangeable.
