As for the gun laws here, I know that the laws are really different, but so is the attitude.
Half the time when Canadians here Americans talk about guns, the mind just boggles. Like the thought that having a gun in your house will protect your family? Not one widely held. Most of the guns that are legally owned are hunting rifles, because we have a lot of wildlife (both for hunting, and just that farmers need them sometimes). Canadians just don't like guns that much. Our thoughts are, if no one carries guns, then we'll all be safer, whereas sometimes the impression we get from places like the NRA is that they think we'd all be safer if *everyone* carried a gun.
There's a joke in Canada that we have the right to bare arms, but we'd rather not, because we sunburn easily.
I know that a few years ago the government pumped a billion dollars into a gun control registry that was very much useless (most of the dangerous guns aren't registered. You can't legally carry automatic weapons or any semi-automatics that can be converted into an automatic).
