but I would say that the pay ones aren't all that expensive.
I'm only going by what I've seen grumbled about on my flist, because I've never had a personal website. I would love to start a McShep/OT4/Porne archive but I don't know the first thing about doing that, and I probably don't have the time to run it the way I want to anyway. But it'd be nice when the fandom dies back to have the stories I love still be available. There are days when I wish I could go back and read the Spike/Angel stories I really liked but can't because the sites are gone. :(
On the other hand, the drawback to that sort of site is that the author is sort of at the mercy of the site owner. I had my Vigorli fic archived and now wish I hadn't because I don't want them to be public anymore, but the owner has apparently disappeared. I've emailed her several times over the past two years asking her to please remove my stories but have gotten no response. Luckily they're under my previous LJ name but I'd still rather they be gone. :/
