Re: LJ vs. Websites

I would love to start a McShep/OT4/Porne archive but I don't know the first thing about doing that, and I probably don't have the time to run it the way I want to anyway.
Ha, should you decide you want to try your hand at it, I'd happily host if for you, and could even help you set it up. ;)

But it'd be nice when the fandom dies back to have the stories I love still be available. There are days when I wish I could go back and read the Spike/Angel stories I really liked but can't because the sites are gone. :(
Yeah, regardless of whether people truly use archives while a fandom is active (although SGA is the first fandom where the archive *hasn't* played a major part in the fics that I read) they are really helpful once the fandom is no longer fresh.
That's why so many authors/readers are drawn to places like FF.net, because it's one place that can keep a record of their fanish activities as they change, and it draws on all fandoms. I just can't respect that site for all the stupid rules they've put in place trying to bend over backwards to outside pressure. That's why I'm excited about the OTW. And as I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] paradise_city below, they have a plan to start a project to adopt archives if the people running it decide they no longer want to run it. That way people running archives can go in knowing that their hard work won't disappear or fall to the wayside should they lose interest in its contents.

On the other hand, the drawback to that sort of site is that the author is sort of at the mercy of the site owner. I had my Vigorli fic archived and now wish I hadn't because I don't want them to be public anymore, but the owner has apparently disappeared. I've emailed her several times over the past two years asking her to please remove my stories but have gotten no response. Luckily they're under my previous LJ name but I'd still rather they be gone. :/
Hmm, what kind of site is it? Most archiving software used out there gives authors the power to edit or delete the works they've put on the site...
