Well I consider my start in fandom to be September 2002 in Smallville fandom but I had experiences in fandom before that. My first time was after I read the 4th HP book in July 2000 and went looking on the internet for more. I found Fiction Alley and such, read some fanfic, planned out a R/Hr fanfic of my own, got some pictures from it. But I never had any real interaction with people. Then I got into a ship on Walker Texas Ranger and found a Yahoo message group and some fanfic sites for that. And I started writing another fanfic for that. My one real interaction was someone mailed me a tape with episodes that shows the generosity of fandom.
But I didn't start actively participating until I fell for Smallville in the summer of 2002 and then fell for Lex/Lana as a ship. I found a website online, contacted the webhost and she told me about a message board for them. There I posted on message boards, read lots of fanfic, chatted with people and...found vids. That's when I made my first vid, started finding a little bit of the larger vidding community and later got an LJ, discovered other shows and fell for slash (learned about Clex earlier though) and then around 2004 to 2005 started really getting into vidding fandom.
Other fannish experiences in real life would be falling in love with The Lion King when I was 6 or so, drawing fanart for it in school no less, creating fictional stories with the characters through objects and talking to friends who loved it as well. I also fell in love with Titanic when I was 10 or so and shipped Jack/Rose, read everything I could about the movie/event, had T-shirts and such about it and talked to friends about it. So really I've always been a fan, the internet just showed me the greater community.
