Unfortunately, trying to explain to my mother why I will neither be watching or buying the show for Political Reasons has been somewhat problematic... I spend a lot of time in fandom, both online and in RL (pretty much all my RL friends are also fannish friends) so it can be really weird for me sometimes talking to non-fannish people. The way fandom approaches things can just be so different from the way the rest of the world does.
Taking a stand when it comes to the morals protrayed in your show is fairly normal in fandom (although you still get the whole "it's just a TV show, if you don't like, don't watch") but when you say things like that in RL most people just look at you like you're kind of nuts and add on a note to not watch if you don't like.
