Numb3rs!
OMG How did I not know that Numb3rs airs at 8 on Global!? I was rewatching the Janus list, and when I turned the TV back on, I was 10 minutes into the new episode! I didn't watch it, because I didn't want to miss a minute. It god damn better be repeating at 10 on CBS, that's all I can say, or else, I might have to kill someone!
I'm such a bad fan. If ever there was a time to use my angsty Colby icon, this is it!
In other news, I managed to get my computer hooked up to my TV, so I should be able to tape the new ep myself (assuming I haven't missed it already) and upload that, rather than waiting for the torrent to appear.
Since there are a bunch of new people to my flist, I might as well take this opportunity to share my goodies.
I tend to upload what ever shows I download to my webpage, if anyone is interested, feel free to help yourself to:
-Numb3rs (all eps so far, and a few extras, code name: Lectures)
-Stargate Atlantis (season 1&2, and parts of season 3&4, code name: Home Video)
-Stargate SG-1 (season 2, 4, and most of 10, code name: Field Trip)
-Supernatural (season 1 and parts of 2, code name: Ghost Strory)

No torrents yet... *shifty eyes*

The file of the episode though is currently over 13GBs and still has commercials. I know how to get rid of the commercials, but I'm not really sure what to use to compress the file. Do you know of anything?

Super is a pretty good program for compressing and converting to avi, but it hates me. Most other folks can use it without any trouble, but it hates me.
The thing to remember when converting and compressing is to watch your bitrate. The lower it is, the better the compression. Definitely no higher than 176... most 350mb files are around 128 for a bitrate.
But hi-def can throw all these figures out the window. You'll probably need to trial and error, which is a fun thing to do when you're trying to get an season opener out to folk. There'a a good chance the torrents will be out before you've figured it out... *hugs*
The easiest program I've ever found for compressing and converting to avi is from Alive Media - http://www.alivemedia.net/ but it isn't free. It's $35USD and one day I'm going to buy the bugger. The free trial only lets you convert 80% of any file, but it is the best, simplest program I've found so far...
Good luck! You'll need it. I am still headdesking every time I try to convert mpeg to avi...

I don't know. I was only give 4 options and I choose "good" I also taped a bit before and after, and all the commercials...
Super is a pretty good program for compressing and converting to avi,
I'm downloading it now. Hopefully I can get it working. I was supposed to have it figured out by now, but you wouldn't *believe* the computer troubles I've been having. My laptop doesn't have a working hard drive, I've been using my mom's computer all week, but she doesn't have the proper video card to do the recording, so I have to use mine. I ended up scrounging up a slightly less broken hard drive, and had to re-install *everything* on it. That's pretty much all I've been doing all night. I'm still going to keep an eye on the Torrents though.
Do you think it'll cause a problem that the original file that I have that's huge is already an .avi

Can you hover your mouse over the file and tell me its bitrate? I suspect it is going to be huge, well into the 400 mark if not higher...

Umm, it's actually 1536 :P
A bit excessive then?
no subject
Yep, just a bit excessive...
Now, it could also be the actual size of your image too. And this is where it can get tricky. If it is a big picture, like over 1000 x whatever, you need to reduce the size of the picture without losing its aspect ratio.
So, for example, your image is 1280x720 or even worse 1920x1080, you need to reduce the the size in proportion. So, for example, 3/4 of the first size would be 960x720, which most would call hi-res. Add that to maybe a 176 bitrate and you'd hopefully end up with a 700-1000mb avi... *fingers crossed*
The smaller the image and lower the bitrate, the smaller the file. But the lower the bitrate the less the picture quality. So don't go below 128 if you can avoid it...

Yeah, I figured I was a bit off when you're like "the bit rate is probably as high as 400!" and it turned out to be like 4 times that much :P

I didn't know a program could make file with a bitrate that high! You learn something new every day...

Re: PS
Type: Video Clip
Duration: 0:42:42
Bit Rate: 1536kbps
Dimensions 720X480
Size 9.07 GB (I took the commercials out and things like that, so it's smaller now)
Re: PS
My advice to you now, if you're not ready to fall into bed, is to try compressing using Super, to the same size but a 176 bitrate and see what size file you end up with... If it is still too big, then try the same size with 128 bitrate. You can then go for a smaller size, 128 bitrate trial run after that if you need to. As I said, it really is trial and error to begin with. Once you find a program you're happy with, and work out your settings, it's simply a case of editing out the commercials etc each week and running it through the compression/conversion program on your usual settings...
And one hour 50 minutes to go on my torrent! *g*
Re: PS
I don't know if I'll be able to use convert this episode, the computer's hard drive really is broken, and it keeps trying to save the file in dead sectors and shutting the whole thing down. But I'll definitely try to get it done next week.
In the mean time, I'm *still* trying to upload Numb3rs to my webpage. I finally had to start over when it said it was at 100% but was still uploading so that the uploaded file was bigger than the actual file :S
