Earthquake

Well, I suppose I shall join in with everyone making "OMG EARTHQUAKE!" posts.

You can tell that I'm a product of social media because I updated Twitter while the earthquake was happening.

Apparently it was a 5.0 (original numbers put it at 5.5 but it's since been downgraded by the USGS) and there hasn't been much damage, although someone here at work said that a bridge collapsed.

The building that I work in isn't all that sound and you can feel people walking by your desk, let alone the trucks outside.

So most of us here sat around in confusion. I think I was one of the first to realize what it was (this isn't the first earthquake I've felt in Ottawa, the first time I had no idea what was going on, this time I clued in faster), although it sounds like one of the guys in my department was under his desk before most of knew what was going on. He feels dumb about it now, however he was really doing what you're supposed to.

We have a visitor from our US office right now and when it started he just started asking "What is that? What's going on!?" and I said it was an earthquake, and he thought I was joking and just kept asking "What's going on!?" Turns out it was his first earthquake and he just couldn't believe that he was in one (in Ottawa of all places).

My work had us all evacuate and stand around for about half an hour outside. The Health Canada building next door looks like they're sending everyone home. Cell phones were down for quite a while, probably because there was too much volume. Some of the windows of our building have been damaged and I guess parts of Ottawa lost power.

There's a video of what appears to be an NDP press conference. I find it kind of hilarious how the NDPer just looks kind of confused and tries to straighten his papers meanwhile the media people are making a run for the door.

ETA: OMG, there are T-shirts already. Designed for Toronto because, you know, they felt it the most *rolls eyes*
