Dear Author

I'm stealing this idea from [personal profile] revolutionaryjo. When I ask an author for permission to podfic their work, I have a certain set of expectations of what that means however, as podficers, we rarely take the time to let the authors in on those expectations unless something weird comes up.

For a number of author's, my request to podfic may have been their first encounter with podfic and they don't really know what to expect. Or even if they do know about podfic, there certainly isn't a consensus among podficers as to what we expect. So, I'd like to spell it out :)

Dear Author,

First of all, thank you so much for writing a story that I find so awesome that I want to podfic it. You're awesome!

I want to podfic your story because I love it enough to put the time and effort into giving fans a new medium in which to experience your story. I want everyone to enjoy it as I do. And I think it's fun to know that people are listening to me as they work or go on walks or fall asleep at night. Primarily, I want to podfic your story for those that will listen to and enjoy it, if that includes you, dear author, that's awesome! But it doesn't have to include you (no pressure, podfic isn't everyone's thing) and you aren't specifically who I think of when I make the podfic. So don't feel any pressure to pimp my podfic if you don't want to.

I will always credit you as the author in both the podfic itself and the announcement posts. I provide a link to your story so that listeners can find their way to you to leave feedback. I will never claim your story is mine, the only thing I claim ownership of is my performance recording of it.

I promise to always keep my podfic within a fannish sphere (as best I can, this is the internet) and if something unusual ever comes up, I'll consult with you before going ahead.

Currently any podfic I make is hosted at my website and at the Audiofic Archive. If there's anywhere else you think my podfic should be hosted let me know and I'll look into it. If where I host ever changes, I'll make a note here. I tend to cross post announcements in a number of places, if you'd like to know which comms, specifically, I can let you know.

If you ever have any questions or concerns about the podfic I've made, please let me know. You can leave a comment here, or email me at parakaproductions at gmail dot com.

Everything I say here is totally up for discussion, I'm pretty flexible, I just want to actually have the chance to discuss things if we're going to work together. :)

What a great idea! I like your note, as it's clear and explanatory.

Did you get my email about Sings The Song Without The Words over the weekend? I just wanted to know if it would be okay if I uploaded it to amplificathon and the audio fic archive.

No worries, and sorry, I didn't mean to pressure you! I was just super excited about finishing the fic and wanted to upload it. :)

Hi there,

I'm pretty new to podficcing and hadn't considered these issues really, so I've used this and revolutionaryjo's letters as a basis to create my own. Great idea!

Cheers
Lizzie
