Slash

I just had an amusing conversation with one of my teachers. We got into a discussion about sci fi and reading habits and I mentioned that most of what I read is published online. On just that information he asked me if it was slash I was reading. The look on his face when I admitted that, yes, it was slash, was pretty hilarious. He got all wide eyed and shocked that I would admit it.

Interesting! He could have asked about fanfiction but no, straight to slash! I wonder if it has something to do with recent coverage of 50 Shades of Grey or not at all. :D

I think that most non-fen think of (boy)slash and fanfiction as synonymous. Which is not entirely wrong, but is also completely wrong /o\

I actually brought 50 Shades of Grey up and he had never heard of it. He's just of an age and was a sci fi fan in the 60s, so I think he heard about slash there. And yeah, like cantarina said, I think people, especially from that era, who aren't in transformative fandom do tend to think of slash and fanfic as almost synonymous (he did admit that he's read fanfic before, but it's not his thing - I don't think he has the patience to sift through the crap (and slash) to find the gems).
