I know that feeling! Except 24 hours usually means skip at least 200. Usually closer to 300. The day it reached 400 in 24 hours, I decided to reduce my communities. ;)
Yeah, I went on this massive defriending thing a few monhs back and haven't really recovered yet, but at the moment I'm happy with how it is, because it sucks if you go away and it takes you like 10 hours to get caught up. LJ is one of those things you have to check often.
Have you considered filtering? I know every once in a while I consider putting some of my communities on a "don't *have* to read" filter, so that if I fall behind I can just skip to the filter without those comms on it.
*looks sheepish* That is with a filter. I'm in a couple of House slash communities and I decided that I like to go back and read them but having them on flist (especially since they tend to have a *lot* of crossover) wasn't necessary. I may have to do that again soon. Although it's not too bad right now.
