OMG People
Oh god, I almost drove off the road this morning when passing a gas station. $1.20! WTF!? Why, there is no ryhme or reason for these super high gas prices! This is ridiculous! I'm suppose to drive past Toronto and back this weekend! This is going to be so painful. When I first started to make the drives from Ottawa to Guelph it cost me $40 to fill up the tank, I'm afraid to find out what it's going to cost this time, but I'm thinking between $60-$70 :S
I swear, when I finally break down and buy a car, I'm going to hold out until I can afford a hybrid. (I was seriously considering buying a bike yesterday and that was *before* this sudden hike!)

I bike + TTC it everywhere. Can you get the bus/train down? Or would it be more expensive?

Taking the train down would be super expensive. It's like twice the price of taking a bus. I wonder why anyone would take the train, sure it's a *little* more comfortable than a bus, but it's not any faster, and is less likely to take you to a location close to where you want to end up.
The bus might be less expensive. I know that it used to be about the same as the gas required to drive down, that was a few years ago, and the gas was cheaper then, so if the price of tickets haven't gone up it might be, but they probably have gone up. Also, I make a couple stops along the way so it really is easier to drive up for now. But I'll probably start busing it soon, if only because I'm hoping to move out and I won't have access to my parents car :)
Gas prices
Re: Gas prices
Actually they were saying on the news this morning that we're paying about 5 cents more than the US on the litre. Our government doesn't help us out as much as the US government does you (although, I'm sure it doesn't feel like that for you).
$1.20/litre works out to be something like $4.55/gallon since there are almost 4 litres in a gallon.
Hell, I wish I could afford a hybrid myself, although I don't really know any details about the financial cost/benefit
I did a quick look into it today and apperantly a hybrid can cost between $5000-6700 more than a non-hybrid model. Which does't sound all that bad to me considering how much cars cost, but I'm sure part of that too is that the non-hybrid models aren't the cheapest models of cars available.
I'm just hoping that by the time I can afford a new car, hybrid technology will have improved significantly.
I think that's probably a safe bet. I mean, a few years ago you'd be hard pressed to find a hybrid car at a normal car lot, but they have them now. And people *are* buying them, so they must be somewhat affordable. I know that my privince will give you a tax break if you buy one of around $1000 so that can factor into the cost as well.
I figure that I'll probably buy a hybrid or if I really can't afford one, a Smart Car.

It's annoying because you know there's no *reason* for the price hikes. They're just being greedy and robbing us for all we're worth. Personally I'm at the point where I want to do as much as I can to avoid giving into oils hold on us. Seriously, I'm going to invest in a hybrid or full out electrical car as soon as I can afford it. We're lucky at our house that we invested in a ground source heat pump a decade ago or so when the government was giving out incentives, because now we run off of electricity instead of natural gas, and it's cheap/environmentally friendly.
