As I often do, I was listening to podfic as I worked today. Specifically I was listening to the Curve series written by [personal profile] rageprufrock and read by [livejournal.com profile] 2naonh3_cl2 and something kind of freaky happened. As I listened, I started hearing echos in my head of another podfic. A podfic read by [personal profile] revolutionaryjo. Specifically Drastically Redefining Protocol by [personal profile] rageprufrock.

It was really weird because the two readers don't particularly sound alike, there were times while listening to [livejournal.com profile] 2naonh3_cl2 read that I could have sworn it was [personal profile] revolutionaryjo reading. I'm sure it's because all of these fics are written by [personal profile] rageprufrock but, it's like, they were both interpreting her writing the same way or something. It was kind of a surreal experience.

I think this is kind of what I expected to feel for [community profile] multipodicity but actually didn't, although I still haven't listened to all that many from the exchange yet, so maybe I just need to give it more time. I'm not sure if I will feel this with [community profile] multipodicity podfics though because the readers are likely more aware of the chance for similarities and are likely trying to make their recording feel different from the other podfic.

I'm kind of surprised that I felt the similarities between the different stories. I'm someone that really sucks at those author guessing games fic exchanges sometimes have. I'm never able to guess an author over at kink memes, even when I'm really familiar with the author's other work. I think there's just something about podfic though, that brings this sort of thing to my attention. Because people read aloud more slowly than I can read in my head, I'm given a chance to get a "feel" for the story more so than I do when reading it.
