So, this is kind of a random question, but have any of my American flisters ever gone to Cuba? Or, non-American flisters tried to go to Cuba while living in the US?

Like, I realize you can't exactly catch a flight to Cuba from the US, but would you get in trouble at the boarder if you were honest with the boarder guard that you were leaving the country to head over to Cuba (with a non-American passport)?

This is mostly theoretical at this point, but I want to go on a tropical vacation, and Cuba's my first choice at the moment but I want raxhel to come with me, and she's living and working in the US right now. I figured that meant we couldn't go but some people at work seemed to think it wouldn't be a problem for her to go, since she's Canadian. Still seems risky to me though....

Question, specifically to the American's on my flist: Memorial Day weekend is coming up, how busy is traffic generally on that weekend?

I'm planning a trip to New York for that week and originally planned on flying in, however when I went to book my flight, I discovered that my passport expired last month. :-/ Cue panicking and early morning trips to the passport office (and much cursing of the new tighter boarder security). They agreed to expedite my passport renewal so I could still leave on the 28th as planned, however, I can only pick it up on the 26. I can't book my flight until I have my passport. And of the flights I was looking at, one of them has all ready been filled and the other ones are getting price hikes. I'm not sure if there's going to be anything available in my price range by the 26th, so I might end up driving down instead. However if traffic is going to be crazy for the long weekend, I might adjust my price range, or else adjust my driving route/schedule.

And, while we're on the topic, does anyone have any suggestions of fun things to do while in NYC? I've been once before, and did a lot of the typical touristy things that time, I was kind of hoping for something a bit different this time. Any suggestions would be awesome.

Now that I'm living in my own house, I've been busing to work since I don't have a car. The bus ride is kind of boring though. Also, I have to leave the house more than an hour before my shift starts when it's really only a 15 minute drive from my place to work. This has been making me want to get a car.

While I could technically afford a car, it would be kind of tight, also if one of my roommates moved out, I'd be kind of screwed.

So, in order to avoid the cost of a car, I've decided that buying a top end MP3 player is much cheaper. That way, at least I'll be less bored on the bus to and from work.

Can anyone rec a good MP3 player to me?

I'm looking for something with a largish screen, since I'd like to be able to read .txt files from it (fic!). I also wouldn't mind putting some of my favourite vids on it. I'd also want something with a decent amount of space on it, and room for removable space would be even better (like an SD or microSD slot). Oh, and I hate it when you have to use a certain program in order to add files to the player, I much prefer ones where you can drag and drop or use on a stranger's computer if need be.

For various reasons, I'm kind of anti-Apple, so suggestions for other manufacturers would be awesome.

So, I'm now a student again! Yesterday I signed up with Athabasca University, where I hope to get a degree in Canadian Studies. It sounds like a really cool course that covers a lot of material. Everything from history, language, politics and literature. I'm not really sure what I'll do with it, but as I've been told over and over again, half the time they don't care what your degree is in, so long as you have one.
I haven't signed up for any classes yet, I'm hoping to speak to an adviser to find out what courses they suggest.

The thing that's nice about AU (which I'm so going to be calling it :P) is it's a school based on distance education, so I can take it and live wherever.

Right now I'm living in Ottawa and working full time. It's a good job, I enjoy it, and it pays well, but I don't actually enjoy living in Ottawa right now. I don't have very many friends here, most of them live in Guelph, or are online. I'm living with my parents, which is really pathetic, and means I haven't much (or, you know, any) of a social life. I live in the country where there's nothing to do, and it's easiest to do nothing.

Also, I'd really like to travel. Like, a lot. Since I don't have to be in one place to take this degree, I kind of want to use that as an excuse to travel, try living in a couple different places. I have a decent amount of money saved up right now, I was thinking of buying a house, but it would be more than enough to let me move and support myself until I found another job. But! I have a really good job right now. Dilemma.

So, I want to ask my flist what they think I should do.

Ok, I haven't even tried Googling this yet, I'll probably try that tonight, but I thought I'd ask here first.

Does anyone know how to get things from your TV onto your computer? I'm doing this special project at work, where we're doing a video. I offered to edit it, but the camera we got only lets you transfer *pictures* to your computer, not video. And now I have all this footage saved on a Mini DV, that I need to get on my computer.

Please say someone knows how to help me!
