Podficcer Love Meme: ON DW | ON LJ

I feel like podfic fandom could really use this right now, so thanks to greedy_dancer for doing it.

As some of you know, I'm currently hosting a copy of the Google streaming code for podficcers to use. It's been whitelisted over at AO3 so we could get pod_together up and running this year and AO3 made an announcement letting people know this and that I'm open to others using the player too if they want.

This week, someone calling themselves nnyrt (zie doesn't seem to have an account at AO3, and I can't find zir on the web by Googling) started leaving comments to that post. In one of the comments about the Google TOS, zie started to attack me, personally, making it clear zie has some kind of personal grudge and/or problem with me.

The statement made was:
"Google Inc. may lack a persona in fandom to sympathize with, unlike londondrowning or ariestess, who were hurt in the past by Paraka's disregard for their derivs statements. But there is nothing transformative about outright theft, especially of something for which use had been served at no charge. It's just tacky."

I would like to make it clear that I do respect authors and I respect when they say yes or no to podfic.

The situation with londondrowning was a complex one that involved miscommuniation because of a 3rd party. I cleared things up with her right away, took down my podfic and, as far as I know, we're on good term and she was happy with the outcome of our situation.

As far as I know, I've never podficced anything by ariestess and I would, of course, respect her say so, should I ever ask and she say no.

Hey, so today the first of my 3 pod_together projects was posted.

On Accents and Podfic, written by me and read by anatsuno.

This was in response to the poll about accents posted to amplificathon at the end of last month. I had originally started writing different meta for anatsuno but when this conversation happened, it sort of ate my brain and this is what I was able to get out.

It was a little hard for me to sit on it this long, since I kept wanting to talk about what I was saying in it when the conversation was still happening, but hopefully people will still find it useful.

I highly suggest listening to the reading of the meta, because it all sounds so much more intelligent in anatsuno's voice (it's also amusing to hear her say that she's a Canadian who understands French accents fairly easily :P)

Thursday started off as any normal day. I was just sitting at my desk at work, poking at what I'd have to do for the day, when I checked my personal email. The first thing I noticed was that fire_juggler posted to amplificathon. Then I noticed that she'd sent me a DM, which I checked first. It said

Happy 5-Year Anniversary! http://ai-podfic.livejournal.com/33124.html Had we known that you would switch fandoms 2 weeks before, we might have chosen differently. But regardless, know that we love you lots and lots, and maybe you can have one last fling with AI before you go. *glomps*

And after reading it (while, actually), I promptly burst into tears. This was kind of awkward and two coworkers had just walked over and they looked kind of alarmed. It actually took me about half an hour to stop crying that morning. I kept working, which I think just made things weirder for my coworkers, as we discussed rebates and filing as I cried. :P

I just, I can't, I honestly don't even know what to say, you guys. I've been trying to write this thank you post for days now and I still am pretty speechless over the whole thing. No one's ever done something like this before. That I have so many friends that were willing to come together and make this for me (and a few others who tried or would have had they known about it) is just so amazing to me.

This is seriously the most amazing thing that ever has happened to me in fandom (and fandom is pretty amazing, so that's saying something). I haven't the preoper words to express how I feel, god.

I haven't finished listening to all my podfic yet, but so far everything has been wonderful and amazing and I love it all.

So, I've basically been going insane for the past few weeks, trying to finish up the school semester. Podfic is one of the only things getting me through this past month. Which leads me to the purpose of this entry.

Dear Bandom friends (you know who you are Twitter peeps),

I hate you all¹. *glares* I have been successfully avoiding bandom for 2 years now, ever since klb tried to convert me. But apparently knowing all the bandom podficcers on Twitter, I've learned a lot through osmosis. And when I asked for podfic recs 12 days ago on Twitter, I got some bandom recs (big surprise). I've now listened to about 40 hours worth of bandom podfic in the, like, 2 weeks since I asked for podfic recs.

I've really been enjoying listening to so much podfic. In the past I listened to podfic a lot at work, so would be listening on a computer. Since I went back to school I haven't had nearly as much podfic listening time since I wasn't at work with the podfic sitting there. But part of how I managed to listen to that much podfic (when really, I've been running around like a chicken with its head cut off for school/work) is because I've finally started putting podfic on my mp3 player. It's pretty awesome being able to listen for the 10 minutes between classes, in the car, while cooking dinner, while falling asleep, etc.

I've come to the realization that, you know how a lot of non-podfic listeners say they don't listen because they can read faster? That is totally not true for me. I can listen to a podfic soooo much faster than I can read the fic. Like, I'm sure if I were to read the equivalent of that 40 hours I've gone though, it would have taken me at least 5X as long.
I've also realized that I would happily substituted all my fic reading for podfic listening (well, except, how would I ever find fic to record myself then? Hmmm, dilemma).

But, yes, I've got a foot in the door for bandom now and am trying to enjoy that new fandom love, by consuming all the awesome things (which is such a nice relief after struggling for months to find things I want to read in AI fandom - though, it is weird to see Adam showing up in bandom things. In one story he was even the bad guy! :P).

¹ Except not really, please send fic recs! (I don't really need podfic recs; at this point I'll probably listen to them all. I've been trying to contain myself to MCR and really like the stories where they're fighting for a greater good or something [Like I Gave Been All Things Unholy or The Fall and Rise of the Black Parade]. Please and thank you!).

For Valentine's Day fire_juggler put out the offer to record short ficlets for people. I've seen a couple other people on my flist make similar offers and thought I'd join in.

There's no way I can do this for Valentine's Day, things are crazy busy with school right now but next week's reading week so I can record some when I get back from NYC. I've been kinda in a podfic funk lately and am hoping that this'll help me get back into podficcing so I can finish up some of my larger projects. :S

So, rules:
1) I make no promises that I'll actually get through all the requests. I'll try, but I have no idea how many requests I'll get.

2) Please keep the requested fics under 2500 words. (Fics with permission already give, ie. blanket permission or author's offering up their own fic, are extra appreciated)

3) You can ask about other fandoms or pairings, but my main fandom is American Idol and I tend to be pretty fixed in my ships (Kris/Adam, Kris/Katy/Adam, David/David, David A/Allison). I've also been feeling out Twin Peaks and Warehouse 13 fandoms lately. :)
